The Kindred's Curse Saga Book 1: Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole

The Kindred's Curse Saga Book 1: Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole is a dark fantasy novel filled with tension, betrayal, and a richly built world of class struggle between the wealthy Descendants and the impoverished humans.

Favorite quote: “We are all made of fire, but some of us burn brighter.”

The story follows Diem, a human who despises the Descendants for their wealth and cruelty, all while her own people suffer from hunger and oppression. When her mother disappears, Diem steps into her shoes as a healer at the palace and meets Luther—a Descendant who suspects Diem is more than she appears. Diem’s denial of her true nature is a powerful theme throughout the book and really resonates as she grapples with her hatred for the Descendants, while secretly aiding the rebellion against them.

Her internal struggle, especially with her childhood friend turned lover, Henri, who pulls her deeper into the rebellion, adds incredible depth to the story. Although, to be honest, her denial gets to be a bit tedious as you progress through the series. Her slightly unlikeable character, as well as the agonizingly this-is-taking-way-too-long slow burn romance, are what keeps this one off of my favorites list.

The cliffhanger ending is intense and sets the stage perfectly for the next book. It may not shock you, but it’s written so skillfully that it still leaves you on the edge of your seat—and this is a trend that continues into the next books of the series!

If you're into stories like Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas or Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, you'll love this one. Fans of strong female leads, political intrigue, and a touch of romance will devour it.

Highly recommend for lovers of dark fantasy and rebellion stories! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
