Unleash Your Workout Motivation: Insights from 'The Little Black Book of Workout Motivation' by Michael Matthews

"The Little Black Book of Workout Motivation" by Michael Matthews is a straightforward and no-nonsense guide aimed at helping readers push through the mental barriers that often prevent them from achieving their fitness goals. Matthews combines science-based strategies with motivational anecdotes, practical tips, and a clear understanding of the psychological obstacles that many people face in maintaining a consistent fitness routine. His writing style is accessible, making the book suitable for both beginners and seasoned athletes.

My favorite quote from the book: “The pain of discipline is far less than the pain of regret.”

Historically, I'm a start-stop, now-and-then, inconsistent (but with good intentions) kinda fitness gal. I just have never loved exercise, although I know the benefits! As I move into my mid-50's, I have started to think more about my health. As Peter Attia says in his book, Outlive, I want my health-span to equal my life-span.

It was probably that book, as well as Atomic Habits by James Clear, that led me to this one, and this one led me straight into the gym! I have been going to the gym every day at 6 a.m. for just over three weeks and am loving it! Not only am I sweating out intense cardio, but also hitting the weights for strength training (low weight, high reps for me). And did I mention I love it? That is a complete about-face in my exercise attitude. I have grudgingly exercised in the past, in spite of claiming to "hate" exercise, only because I knew it was good for me...which is probably why I never stuck to it.

This book changed my attitude about exercise, which has been a game-changer for me.

If you're someone who struggles with inconsistency or lacks the motivation to exercise regularly, this book is a great fit. It’s ideal for anyone in need of a mindset shift—especially those like me, who are finally taking health more seriously as we age. Fitness enthusiasts, gym newbies, or those recovering from workout slumps will also appreciate Matthews’ direct approach.

Other similar reads might include "Can't Hurt Me" by David Goggins and "The Motivation Myth" by Jeff Haden. Michael Matthews has also authored other popular fitness books like "Bigger Leaner Stronger" and "Thinner Leaner Stronger."

Recommendation: Highly suggested for anyone wanting to break their fitness barriers.
